I would like to share the data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (United Nations) released in 2012, in thousands of tonnes.

Reading the previous list, it is easy to see that the countries from the old Soviet Union put together would be one of the first wine producers in the world. We were curious about those countries and when we got some statistics, we thought to share. Mind, production statistics are not always reliable, but we think the table below helps to paint the image.

Consumption per capita is so low in Turkey because taxes on wine are punishing and so it is very expensive to drink wine there - although other alcoholic beverages such as beer do not have such punitive taxation.

In Russia, vodka is the traditional drink, so wine consumption is low compared to the production.
