Barberry ketchup

The barberry plant is a shrub. It produces bright yellow flowers in the spring that turn into red berries in the fall. The berries are edible but difficult to harvest because of its thorny branches.

3 q barberry (stewed and strained)
4 c cranberry
1 c raisin
1 quince (large, chopped)
4 onion (small, minced)
1 q water
1⁄2 c vinegar
3⁄4 c salt
2 c sugar
1 t clove (ground)
1 t allspice (ground)
2 T pepper (ground black pepper)
1 t mustard (ground mustard)
1⁄2 t cayenne pepper
1 t ginger (ground)
1 t nutmeg (ground)

  1. Stew together the cranberries, raisins, quince and onion in the water, strain.
  2. Mix in the barberries, and remaining ingredients, boil 1 minute, and simmer until desired thickness.

Goes well with red meats.
