Rice porridge from Norway


Rice porridge would be part of a Norwegian breakfast menu, accompanied of soft boiled eggs, goats cheese and rye crisp or flatbread.


4 c milk
1⁄2 t salt
1 c rice (cooked rice)
2 t butter


  1. Bring milk to a boil over medium heat. Add salt and give it stir.
  2. Add rice and butter. Cook for 15 minutes stirring non stop.
  3. Turn heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Serve hot.


Before serving, sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over the rice porridge, or top with 1 teaspoon butter and a little extra milk. Thick cream, raisins and honey also make a good Norwegian fix for rice porridge.

If you don't have rice at hand, use oats, or other breakfast cereals, accompanied and your favorite Norwegian toppings from the list above.
