Simple deviled crab

Deviled crabs are very easy to make from canned crab meat. Calories are very much reduced in this recipe because white sauce is not used.

Ingredients

2 c crab (cooked and flaked)
1⁄2 t salt
2 pn pepper (ground black pepper)
1 T onion (grated)
1⁄2 c bread crumbs (dried)
2 T butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Rub butter into 6 individual oven proof containers.
  2. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl, except melted butter and breadcrumbs. Distribute the mixture into the containers.
  3. Mix breadcrumbs and melted butter and spread on top of the crab mixture.
  4. Bake on the center rack for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Notes

Use custard cups or individual ramekins. Well scrubbed empty crab shells or large clam shells are another option. You could also bake the deviled crab in a single oven pan.

Although canned crab meat should be perfectly clean, be sure to check for bits of shell and pick them out if there is some.

Substitute butter with vegetable margarine or oil for a milk-free, dairy-free deviled crab. Worcestershire sauce should not have any dairy in the list of ingredients, but always check.
