Hosting a Super Bowl party

Fan of football or not, the Super Bowl can be a great time to get together with friends.

Even it you aren’t a big fan of football, the Super Bowl is still enjoyable to watch just for the commercials alone, and for the half time show. Watching the Super Bowl with a group of friends is even more fun. Here are a few tips if you are hosting the Super Bowl get together.

Decorating and Entertainment

A Super Bowl party really doesn’t require decorating, but if you’d like to here are some ideas to consider. Get football shaped bowls or platters. Use the colors of your favorite team for plates, napkins and tablecloths.  Or if you and your friends don’t agree on a favorite team, use the colors of both teams in the game. You could even separate your seating area by team using streamers and balloons. Poster of the teams or players could be hung also.

The main entertainment of course is the game. Be sure you have plenty of seating for all your guests, but don’t forget those who really aren’t that into football. Even if you live and die by the score board, not all guests will be content to do nothing but stare at the game. Set up a game table nearby so guests can do something else while they watch the game. Provide cards or board games. Another seating area away from the game is nice too for guests who want to chat, but don’t want to talk over the game.

The food

Typical Super Bowl food is easy and economical too.  The best foods are finger foods. Be sure to provide lots of napkins! People will graze on the food. So, it is important to choose items that are still good at room temperature, or that you can quickly heat up in smaller batches. If there are items that need to stay hot, a crock pot will do the trick. For condiments or dips that need to stay cold, a simple trick is to fill a large bowl with ice. Put the food item in a smaller bowl, and then nestle the smaller bowl down into the ice.

Some ideas for food: chicken wings, refried bean dips with chips, sub sandwiches cut into slices about two inches wide, chips and dip, pizza, vegetable tray, little smokies with barbecue sauce, tortilla roll ups or pinwheels, nuts, or meatballs. Many of these items can be bought pre-made, but you will save a lot of money by making as much as you can yourself.

Desserts aren’t a main focus at a Super Bowl party, but we all like a little something sweet. Again keep it simple, and finger foods work best. Cookies are a great choice, or maybe football shaped chocolate candies.

Drinks

It just wouldn’t seem right to have a Super Bowl party without beer. It is perfectly acceptable to keep that beer ice cold in a cooler full of ice. In fact, it lends to the party theme. Be sure to provide a variety of non-alcoholic drinks also, and do not let anyone drive home who you suspect has had too much.

Of course the main thing to remember when you are hosting a party is to plan ahead. Have everything in place before guests arrive, so when your guests are there you can enjoy time with them and watch the game without being stuck in the kitchen the whole party.
